2022 Jim Vlock Building Project

In Collaboration with Sam Hrusovsky, Felipe Trujiullo, Miranda Clarke, Erin Bascom, Harong Lee, Pobby Tan, and Tini Tang

With limited space and frequent train activity, our ADU proposal for the building project was careful in maximizing privacy and seclusion while preserving the potential for communal engagement between neighbors. The layout derives from a central wall which demarcates programming along its axis. On the exterior, the wall separates private spaces for the residences from the collective space of the garden. On the interior, the wall punctuates access through the house that becomes progressively private. Skylights are used to provide natural light without compromising privacy. By pushing storage space and utilities to the western wall, its thickness can be justified in serving both utilitarian functions as well as a noise dampener from the passing trains.
