Folio & Folly

Containers of Life and Image

The aim of this project is to house two ontologically disparate yet synthetically similar entities under a single structure: The endangered Purple Martins native to New England (reliant on human intervention to survive) and an elephant folio of John Audubon’s beautifully rendered images of the same birds. Juxtaposing these paradigms results in a proposal that considers a unique relationship between two ideas which were once at odds with one another. The result is a fictional folly which provides nesting for the birds while containing a folio within the center. Situated within an abandoned factory island, the comparatively minuscule structure juxtaposes the great aging industrial presence with a smaller, more humble symbol of regeneration.
