Fractured Impressions

Spatial Gestalt

Using Tadao Ando’s distinction between Japanese and Western architecture as a reference, this film explores gestalt in relation to space. In essence, he defines two differing approaches to spatial conception- one in which the whole is derived from its parts (Japanese) and one in which the parts are derived from a preconceived whole (Western). Through montage, a scaleless object is perceived only through details and refuses a lucid understanding of the entire object. Juxtaposing shots are coupled with identical ones in an effort to distort and recontextualize the initial image. In this way, collisions between cellular shots divide to generate new concepts and deny the fixed object a static reading.
