“Kabuto”

The Chair

Named after the Japanese beetle and the samurai helmets it resembles, Kabuto unifies material experimentation and formal expression. The dynamic form of the seat-base expresses both the structural limits and the versatility of the chosen material, bendable plywood. Strategic perforations allow the plywood sheets to bend over the formwork’s extreme radii during vacuum-sealing. Then, reinforcement with fiberglass and resin makes the seat effortlessly bendy but structurally robust. The metal back cantilevers from the seat-base, a comfortable support which automatically adjusts to bodyweight. Contrasting the wood, the shiny metal completes the chair as a visually curious work of furniture.
